This problem is a common one on Answers, several times each day for months. Either your mail was infected by malware (a trojan, not a virus) or spoofed by spammers, or your address was found in someone else's infected computer. The results are the same: that address will need to be changed. This new trojan malware can infect computers and get the address book simply by opening the mail - no click is necessary, so it spreads fast!
- First, check your sent box to be sure these were not being sent from your account as a 'zombie' spambot machine.
- Second, open your profile to be sure your password and secret questions & answers and alternate mails remain the same.
- Third, change all that information to more secure and unusual ones.
- Fourth, read the references below for the best explanations I've ever seen.
- Fifth, this could be a malware attack so do a scan in Safe Mode (Malwarebytes is best). Then delete all System Restore Points before re-booting into normal mode.
- Sixth, set up a new account and new alternate accounts. Do not close the old ones until all information is transferred. Import the Contacts list, and forward important saved mails too.
https://edit.yahoo.com/registration?.int… (new address)
http://edit.yahoo..com/config/list_alias… (alternate address)
- Last, contact everyone with your new address, including your name and 'new address' in the Subject line, as well as an apology to them. Urge ALL of them to use BCC: and delete all addresses when forwarding mail too! Warn them not to click ANY links or even open mail from the old address. (Some malware can infect computers just by opening the mail.)

Changing your password is NOT sufficient, even though that is Yahoo's advice! Use a very strong password (letters, capitals, punctuation, numbers, symbols - the longer the better.) Start with a sentence, and make substitutions. Be sure the result is one you can remember. Change your 'Secret' Questions and Answers too - ones that nobody could guess - Yahoo even allows you to invent your own questions. Change and add all-new alternate e-mail addresses too.

I'm hotmail. (gmail?) and I was hacked last week. I suppose I shouldn't check my email at Starbucks and such, when they are unsecured?

Access via starbucks isnt the problem. It's servers, malware, or an infected computer that has you on an email list.

Apparently passwords are hackable not using cracker ware. It can be done using a keylogger, which is injected by malware. Also the password per the above emails and what I read are also due to vulnerabilities with the service concerning password recovery. -sighs-

That means there are sh*ts out there who simply really learn these systems and processes and go through the effort to get into your account. I dont think peopel just do all this for fun, but are paid, because spam is big business.

I know the worlds biggest spammer was shut down a month ago, but it appears they are back in business with a force.

Since gmail has spam, it's not immune, especially with smart phones and ipads. Once hackers figure out how to really crack open the cloud, there will be no stopping them. This is why I dont use the cloud app on my iphone.

The other vulnerability is we are not just on home PCs anymore, our services are all on phones and mobile devices. It's not difficult to hack a smart phone, but it does take time and some determination.

I've given up on trying to get people to use BCC and stop forwarding things with 500 addies attached. Another thing to add to the computer clean up is to make certain you have you have the correct and updated version of JAVA installed.

New Windows OS's are rolling out as 64-bit and the IE the that comes with it is also 64-bit. Chrome for Win7 is only 32-bit. You have to download BOTH the 32 and 64-bit versions in order to be protected. *sigh*

I've just decided to use Yahoo for alerts from LJ, FB and other various things at this point. Will be clearing out and killing my address book there.

Thanks for the info.

I cant run 64 bit anything. I have Norton. LOL

Kaspersky is what I've migrated over to and we've traced the hack to my Android-based phone. Running old Yahoo software. Issue has been resolved. My phone is too old to add other protection to - not enough memory - so I'm dropping the Yhaoo features for now.

Getting tired of having to keep up with this crap. If I'd wanted to work in the IT business, I'd have signed on with my brother.

You have to keep running faster just to stay in the same place--

Remember, you don't NEED half the tech we use. It's more fashion and more WANT. I am not a tool for technology, I am the one who uses technology as the tool. Anyone who admits to being a hacker in front of you, you have my permission to slap them.

Finally, if a hacked email account is the only thing bad happening, then life is good. Because it means you are loved, and have friends, and plenty of food, and no one died, and have the toys that some assh*le could hack.

So true. I'm happy that all else is good and I really don't take that for granted. I'd get by without my laptop, phone and iPod if it came down to that. Perspective is everything.

People tend to trade security for convenience without realizing that they are making themselves more vulnerable.

I got an email from someone in the fandom and it had no header so I'm a little afraid of opening it. I am entered in a few exchanges, so I am not sure if it is concerning that or not. :(
